Second Annual NC Foundation for Public School Children Golf Tournament Will Provide Basic Necessities for Students Across the State

RALEIGH, N.C., June 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Monday, June 23, a full field of golfers will take to the greens at the beautiful Crooked Creek Golf Course inFuquay-Varina to help thousands ofNorth Carolina students come to school ready to learn. The event is the second annual golf tournament of the North Carolina Foundation for Public School Children. Registration opens at noon; tee-off time is 1:30 p.m.

Last year's golf tournament raised nearly $10,000 to help provide basic items such as eye glasses, shoes and medicine for public school students across state. This special fundraiser is free to spectators.

"The Foundation specializes in helping public school children in need by offering a bureaucracy-free way to get financial assistance to students for necessities or educational opportunities," said Kelvin Spragley, the Foundation's director. "Any public school employee who encounters a student who needs such basic items as shoes, a warm coat, or any education-related item can fulfill that need with only one phone call to the Foundation."

Spragley indicates that the major item requested for children over the past several years has been eyeglasses; however, the Foundation offers assistance for a multitude of items including clothes and funding for school-related field trips. The Foundation awards more than $70,000 in supplemental funds to help students each academic year.

The second annual Foundation fundraiser has the support of such notable donors as the North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE); National Education Association (NEA); Neal, Bradsher and Taylor; Embarg; Holiday Inn - Brownstone; Primary Health Choice; Hunters Creek Middle School; Wake NCAE; Forsyth County Association of Educators (FCAE); Cook Insurance; Porter Scientific, Inc.; Mansfield, Scott & Clark PLLC; NCAE Cluster 5-B; NCAE Cluster 2; Sandletree Church of God; Wingate University; NC Teacher Cadet Program; Walter Boggan; Bruce Schell, Kim Hargett, and John Ferguson.

"The Foundation offers one the best opportunities to fill the economic gaps that exist for too many of North Carolina's public school students," said NCAE President Eddie Davis. "The Association started the Foundation because public school educators saw more and more children coming to school without the basic necessities, without items they need to be ready to learn. The practice has been for many educators to use their own money to meet the needs of their students. The Foundation provides an easy way to help students."

The Foundation is an independent 501(c)3 non-profit founded by NCAE in 1995. NCAE is the state's largest education association, representing 65,000 active, retired and student members. To participate as golfer, contact Kelvin Spragley at 800-662-7924, ext. 204.
