Brooke Shields The Latest to Sign The Declaration of Compassion
Celebrities Sign The Declaration of Compassion, Others Encouraged to Acknowledge Dangers of Agribusiness
WHO: Kathy Stevens, Founder and Director of Catskill Animal Sanctuary, a New York haven for 12 species of farmed animals, and author of Where the Blind Horse Sings: Love and Healing at an Animal Sanctuary, currently in its third hardcover printing.
WHAT: The Declaration of Compassion, already signed by SNL's Kristen Wiig, hip-hop pioneer Russell Simmons, "Bones" star Emily Deschanel, Academy-award winning filmmaker Zana Briski and other vegetarian celebrities.
Modeled in both form and tone after the Declaration of Independence, the Declaration of Compassion declares its signers' independence not from England, but from agribusiness. Tied into the green movement and putting a new twist on a national holiday, its purpose is to generate awareness of the consequences of agribusiness and inspiration for those considering transitioning to a vegetarian diet.
As Stevens explains, "Global warming is challenging all of us to radically and immediately alter our behavior. Since agribusiness is the #1 culprit in everything from the melting of the Polar ice caps to the extinction of animal and plant species to water shortages, we must all alter our diets if we want this beautiful planet to be here for our children and grandchildren."
WHEN: Official signing ceremony to be held Saturday, June 28, 2008, at 3 pm/EST at Catskill Animal Sanctuary's 7th Annual Shindig, attended by 1,000+ people. Media invited.
Online version enables supporters to sign remotely. In its first hour online, the Declaration was signed by people from 14 states and 8 countries. CAS hopes to have 100,000 signers by July 4.
Stevens can discuss:
The industrialization of food and its impact on animals, humans, and the environment
The symbolic link between the Declaration of Independence and the Declaration of Compassion
The health benefits of a diet free of animal products
Life-altering experiences with rescued animals and their implications for the educational work of Catskill Animal Sanctuary
The impact of the country's economic crisis on animal shelters
Fourth of July barbeque and picnic options
