Woody Harrelson: Forty Days Without Weed?

In the New Testament, Jesus fasted for forty days and forty nights to completely experience all of humanity. Then Satan tempted and dared Him that if He was the Son of God, then Jesus would turn stones into bread. Jesus refused, stating that "Man shall not live by bread, but by the Word of God."

Woody Harrelson is no Jesus, though, but some called him "mental" when it comes to the environment. The actor/activist is no stranger when it comes to making waves, when an article from Sunday's Times Magazine stated that he plans on a 40-day fast on a remote, deserted island and plans to drink his water from a stream.

"I know it's going to be really hard" said the 46-year-old. "But can you imagine it? Eating nothing for 40 days? Swimming and surfing every day in a remote place? Where does the mind go?"

Woody began his career as the lovable yet childlike Woody on the Emmy-winning series, Cheers. He joined the cast in its fourth season in 1985 and remained until the end in 1993, and went on to have a successful film career in leading as well as supporting roles like 1994's Natural Born Killers, The People v. Larry Flynt, which he was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar nomination, and recently Semi-Pro with Will Farrell, which is now available on DVD.

He explains a more practical approach of another interest of his. "I was working with a scientist on a new invention that will revolutionize how we can up sewage" Woody continues. "It's cool. Usually our government treats our toxic sewage waste with even more toxic chemicals, and then declares it safe for drinking. The method we're developing does it without chemicals and its 85% to 90% clean when it comes out. I think we're gonna start with hog waste."

Woody lives on an organic-farming community with his wife, former assistant Laura Louie, who's also an environmental activist. The couple has three daughters ranging from ages 1 to 15.

"He [Woody] really lives the life he's advocating" states activist attorney Tom Ballanco who has worked with Woody on several causes. "He gets a lot of respect from a lot of actors and other celebrities higher up on the list."
