War, Ethics and Justice in a Post 9/11 World

Conference at University of Leicester on 9 June


One of the first conferences to explore in an integrated way historical questions and theories of war and justice together with recent issues raised by the 'war on terror' and the war in Iraq will take place at the University of Leicester on Monday 9th June.

The Conference, 'War, Ethics and Justice in a Post 9/11 World' is part of the conference series: 'Global Ethics in the 21st Century' and will be run by the University's Centre for Diplomatic and International Studies.

The conference will address three policy-related areas: National Military Ethics; Intelligence Ethics; and Femininities, Masculinities and Difference. It is part of a major research focus developed at Leicester on war and the war on terror, ethics and justice, and is jointly run by the Department of Politics and International Relations and the Department of Media and Communication.

Keynote speaker will be Caroline Kennedy-Pipe, from the University of Warwick. Other speakers will include Shlomo Shpiro (Bar Ilan University, Israel), Daniel Conway (Loughborough University); Adrian Hyde-Price and Rob Johnson (University of Bath); Peter Lawler and Cristina Masters (University of Manchester); and Thomas Moore (University of Westminster).

Co-organiser Professor Mark Phythian from the Department of Politics and International Relations commented: "A series of post 9/11 controversies have highlighted the importance of ethics in politics and international relations and we need informed debate about these issues. The speakers we are bringing together offer a distinctive range of perspectives and expertise."

Gillian Youngs, of the Department of Media and Communication added: "Security is high on the national agenda right now and the 'war on terror' climate has led to new insecurities for individuals and communities. This conference will address these vital issues."
