Those who follow the protests against Scientology in Europe have probably heard of Christian Markert. He had a rather mysterious history inside the cult, as a member of OSA in Buffalo, NY, but quite recently escaped to Germany where he now lives. He has written a book (to be published in German and in English) about his experiences. So far so good.
Now however he has problems and they never come singly. He has been diagnosed with stomach cancer. This was caught early and the prognosis is favorable but he is not feeling well, to say the least. This at least cannot be blamed on Scientology. However they have launched a two-pronged 'Fair Game' attack. His publishers no longer want to publish his book. This is all bad enough but now the CoS is suing him and he has legal fees to pay.
Christian needs help and he has come up with a plan. He plans to publish his book himself and sell it through a web-page with payment facilities. I believe the price will be around $20. He proposes to add on $1 to cover his legal fees. Some of us might want to make larger donations in this good cause. If some critics of Scientology can barely afford to pay $20 for a book, others can easily make a donation of $100 or more.
Christian has the best possible referees in Larry Brennan, a recent defector, and Ursula Caberta, a long-time critic, of Hamburg.
This could be the start of a new phase in the Anonymous campaign. Critics of Scientology have no central organization, and for good reasons. Mark Bunker points out that when there was such an organization - the Lisa MacPherson Trust - it merely provided Scientology with a large target. There is therefore no central source of financial help for Fair-Game victims like Christian Markert, or indeed for other worthwhile activities like publishing.
All of us who have reason to fear the evil that is Scientology should support Christian at this juncture. His video 'I need your Help' is below.
