Blunt: Dems' Tortured Logic - $55.5 Billion in New Taxes on a Bill to Extend Tax Relief

WASHINGTON, May 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- House Republican Whip Roy Blunt (Mo.) issued the following on the Democrats' latest attempt to extend tax cuts for some people by raising taxes on everyone else:

"Leave it to Democrats to use an important tax relief package for some as a vehicle to raise taxes on others by more than $55 billion. Although it's logic that seems to make sense among Democratic leaders in DC, I can assure you it doesn't make much sense to the hard-working American families who already send too much of their paychecks toWashington.

"Of course, the problems with this bill start -- but don't end -- at faulty logic. Democrats also attempt to impose double taxation on U.S. businesses trying to compete overseas, all while rewarding their political allies with $1.6 billion in tax breaks for trial lawyers.

"But what's most noteworthy with this bill is what it does not include: AMT relief. Democrats either willingly chose to ignore the problem, or they couldn't get the support of their conference to confront the issue in a serious way. Whatever the reason, their actions send a message that's loud, clear, and unambiguous about where they stand on this burdensome tax that hurts middle-class American families.

"While this may be the first time the House passes this package, it certainly won't be the last. The president has suggested a veto, and the Senate has said it won't go along either. I'd respectfully suggest to my Democratic colleagues that they figure out a way to get this legislation signed into law, and not just passed through the House of Representatives."
