Blunt: Democrats Push Largest Tax Hike to Tune of $683 Billion
WASHINGTON, May 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- House Republican Whip Roy Blunt (Mo.) issued the following statement today as Democrats prepared to push through the fiscal year '09 budget conference report containing the largest tax increase in American history - for the second year in a row:
"Today's vote gives the clearest example yet of the direction each party wants to take America. While Republicans believe the best place for your money is in your wallet, Democrats believe instead they're doing you a favor by forcing you to send that money toWashington so they can spend it for you.
"Last year's Democratic budget held the dubious record of imposing the largest tax hike in American history, but unfortunately it was a record that was short lived. The budget they brought out of conference today would raise Americans' taxes by $683 billion over the next five years alone. Whether it was promises to rein in spending, rein in gas prices, or reign over the most open and ethical Congress in history, Democrats have spent their time in the majority over-promising and under-delivering - and in some cases, making matters many times worse than they were.
"Both parties believe that Congress should work to address the current state of our economy, but only Republicans believe that responsible spending and lower taxes for American families should be the building block for any legislation to jump-start our markets."
NOTE: On April 3 of this year, Democratic Leader Steny Hoyer conceded on the House floor that raising taxes, in accordance with the majority's Pay-Go rules, would have a negative effect and "depress" our nation's economy.
