PEI Applauds Governor Culver's Veto of Labor Bill

DES MOINES, Iowa, May 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, Professional Educators ofIowa, the state's non-union education association, praised Governor Chet Culver's decision to veto a controversial labor bill, HF 2645, which would have greatly expanded the collective bargaining rights of public sector unions. PEI says the governor has demonstrated responsible leadership and sensitivity to all of the employees of the state.

"This highly flawed and force-fed bill would have neglected the rights and desires of all non-union workers," said Jim Hawkins, Executive Director of PEI. "The bill appeared to be a power-play to satisfy the pressures of unions to control our state's destiny."

The bill caused a stir earlier in the session when Democrats in the House and Senate expedited its passage. There were no public hearings held on the bill, causing Republicans in the legislature to protest. Before the bill actually reached his desk for signature, Gov. Culver expressed concern over the lack of public input allowed on the bill, and threatened to veto it.

"Local control being scuttled does not best serve individual communities," said Hawkins. "The collective bargaining process must be balanced for the benefit of the people ofIowa whom the state employees serve."

Hawkins went on to say, "Of all of the organizations that should demonstrate tolerance and rights of diverse beliefs, it should be our state government. Professional Educators ofIowa looks forward to working with all who respect independent beliefs in negotiating what is right for the workers of Iowa."

Professional Educators ofIowa is an independent educators' association, dedicated to professionalism and doing what is best for the children.
