Breakthrough science and baseball make kids MVP's

RYE, N.Y. (EWORLDWIRE) May 16, 2008

Curemark LLC founder and CEO Dr. Joan Fallon will continue to live a dual existence this spring and summer. From Monday through Friday, she expends her energies in moving Curemark rapidly toward clinical trials for a promising new enzyme replacement therapy for autism; on weekends, she combines her love of children and baseball by standing in as an umpire for the New Rochelle Challenger League.

The Challenger Division was established in 1989 as a separate division of Little League Baseball to enable boys and girls with physical and mental disabilities, ages 5-18 or the through the completion of high school, to enjoy baseball along with the millions of other children who play worldwide. Challenger players wear the same uniforms, shoulder patches and safety equipment as other Little League players.

A graduate of the Harry Wendelstedt School, the training ground for Major League umpires, Dr. Fallon looked for a way to bring baseball and children together, and decided that the Challenger League might be the perfect fit. The local league did not have an umpire for its Saturday afternoon games, so Dr. Fallon stepped up to the plate to make the experience for the children more realistic. Fallon said, "It is a most heartwarming experience to see Challenger league players and their child volunteer 'buddies' out on the playing field, just enjoying baseball."

For all her scientific fame, Dr. Fallon is moved by the opportunity. "The highlight of my week is seeing these children participate in America's game and to do it in an environment where there is no judgment. I call, 'SAFE,' all afternoon, and an occasional strike to keep the parent volunteer pitcher honest, but the kids get a charge out of being called safe when they reach their base. Everyone's a winner."
