'It's Not All About Me': Author Shares Depression-Era Experiences of His Italian-American Family

CHESIRE, Conn., May 16 /PRNewswire/ -- It's an autobiography in every sense of the word, but "It's Not All About Me" (published by AuthorHouse -- http://www.authorhouse.com), the new memoir from Elvio Del Monte, is also true to its title. The story goes beyond just Del Monte himself, placing emphasis on the important roles his mother, father, siblings and many others had in shaping him into the man he is today.

"I grew up in a period of history that was truly exciting," says Del Monte, who was born in 1923 to an Italian-American family living inUtica, N.Y. "From where I stand today, looking back on the memories of our family, experiences during this period had to be documented."

As the eldest child, Del Monte felt it was his responsibility to put the family history into writing, so that it might be learned from and enjoyed by generations to come. But while it serves as a personal account of history for the Del Monte family, it also serves as a snapshot of life in America for readers everywhere who are interested in what it was like for someone growing up during the depression years and the recovery initiatives by President Franklin Roosevelt that followed.

"The period prior to the crash of 1929 did not prepare us for the consequences of that catastrophe," Del Monte admits. "My story details what we experienced as individuals and as a family during the crash, and what followed during the get-well process."

Del Monte goes on to document his experiences in the U.S. Army, including going through basic training and medical training, as well as specialized training as a mountaineer in the 10th Mountain Division.

Much of Del Monte's identity is tied to his role as a mountaineer, as he achieved the rank of corporal and earned a Bronze Star and Purple Heart during his tour of duty inEurope. Following his honorable discharge, Del Monte earned a bachelor's degree from Syracuse University and later attended management programs at Crosby Quality College, Lehigh University, Stanford University and Harvard Business School.

Prior to his retirement from a high-tech electronics corporation as Senior Vice President of Manufacturing, Del Monte held a variety of executive positions with several leading technology corporations throughout the U.S., plus offshore direct responsibilities inMexico andPuerto Rico, and indirectly with facilities inFrance,England andScotland. He currently resides in Chesire, Conn.
