Institute for Sustainable Communities Establishes China Earthquake Relief & Recovery Fund
MONTPELIER, Vt., May 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- TheVermont-based Institute for Sustainable Communities has established a China Earthquake Relief & Recovery Fund to aid communities devastated by the earthquake that struckSichuan Province on Monday, May 12, with some 10 million people directly affected.
The organization will direct 100% of donations made to the fund to Chinese organizations working on the ground to help earthquake survivors.
ISC has a climate change and community development program inGuangdong Province, which is to the southeast ofSichuan Province, the site of the quake's epicenter. ISC staff members are based inGuangzhou, the capital ofGuangdong, and inBeijing.
Officials now estimate that more than 19,000 people have been killed, warning that the number could rise to 50,000. Thousands more are missing. Conditions in the mountainous region are very challenging, with limited access to food and clean water, and an enormous need for shelter and medical care.
