Toshiba Adds 60GB Model to Industry-Leading Automotive Hard Disk Drive Line
IRVINE, Calif., May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba Storage Device Division
(SDD), the industry pioneer in small form factor hard disk drives (HDDs),
today expanded its automotive-grade HDD line to include a 60GB(1) offering,
delivering a new capacity point to automotive manufacturers and aftermarket
solution providers looking for high-capacity storage for sophisticated
navigation, media center and connected auto solutions in the new digital car.
Toshiba's sixth-generation 60GB automotive HDD (MK6050GAC) joins Toshiba's
existing automotive-grade HDD series that includes both 40GB and 80GB models.
All models feature the improved altitude specification of 5,500 meters,
pushing the boundaries of in-dash system design to meet the operating extremes
of today's driving environment.
"Automotive electronics designers are seeking robust storage solutions to
address the next generation of infotainment in the digital car," said Scott
Wright, product manager, Toshiba Storage Device Division. "The new 60GB model
comes in response to our customers' storage requirements and provides greater
flexibility for OEM and aftermarket designers to integrate high-capacity
solutions for sophisticated in-car infotainment systems."
Toshiba also has reached the milestone of more than eight million
automotive-grade HDDs shipped into OEM and aftermarket solutions since the
company introduced its first automotive-grade HDD in 2001, highlighting strong
demand and accelerated adoption of innovative storage solutions by the
automotive industry world-wide. The company's leadership in automotive HDDs
draws from more than 10 years of experience working with the automotive
industry to develop road-ready storage solutions. According to Techno Systems
Research (TSR) Co., Ltd, Toshiba commands 84 percent market share in the
automotive-class HDD segment(2).
Toshiba will showcase its industry-leading automotive class HDD line at
the Telematics Detroit 2008 show at the Rock Financial Showplace inNovi, MI,
May 21-22. In addition, Wright will speak on a panel titled "Exploit the
Future Capabilities of Connect In-Car Device Integration" on May 21 at 4:15
p.m. in the Ruby Room to offer insight on the role of storage in the
development of the digital car.
Samples of Toshiba's new automotive-grade HDDs will be available later
this year to automotive OEMs and aftermarket suppliers. Interested design
engineers can visit http://www.toshibastorage.com for more information on
Toshiba's line of industry-leading 40GB, 60GB and 80GB automotive-grade HDDs.

1. One Gigabyte (1 GB) means 10^9 = 1,000,000,000 bytes using powers of
10. A computer operating system, however, reports storage capacity
using powers of 2 for the definition of 1 GB = 2^30 = 1,073,741,824
bytes, and therefore shows less storage capacity. Available storage
capacity will also be less if the computer includes one or more
pre-installed operating systems, pre-installed software applications
or media content. Actual formatted capacity may vary.
