SAFE Urges Passage of McConnell Amendment on Domestic Supply
WASHINGTON, May 12 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Securing America's Future Energy (SAFE) today urged the Senate to pass Senator Mitch McConnell's amendment to the Consumer First Energy Act of 2008, allowing for an expansion of domestic production of oil and natural gas.
"The McConnell amendment represents another step toward addressing America's energy security vulnerabilities," SAFE President and CEO Robbie Diamond said. "It is imperative, however, that our policymakers put forward serious, thoughtful proposals that include all of the components we will need to take to safeguard our nation: using less oil through efficiency standards, producing more oil and natural gas, accelerating sensible alternatives, and investing in new technologies."
The amendment -- which mirrors legislation introduced in early May by Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee ranking member Pete Domenici (R-NM) and co-sponsored by 19 other senators -- would allow petitions for energy development in the Atlantic and Pacific regions of the Outer Continental Shelf. The Senate is scheduled to vote on the amendment tomorrow.
"Our economy and our national security are at risk, and mitigating that risk will require a comprehensive slate of policy changes," Diamond added. "Without question, increases in domestic production must be accompanied by reductions in oil demand and promotion of effective alternative fuels. The McConnell amendment represents a prudent and necessary expansion of domestic supply."
Securing America's Future Energy (SAFE) is an action-oriented, nonpartisan organization that aims to reduce America's dependence on oil and improve U.S. energy security to bolster national security and strengthen the economy.
