Paro, the World's Only Robotic Baby Harp Seal - Designed Specifically for Therapy - to be Focus of Industry Event at Vinson Hall Retirement Community in McLean, Va., June 2


MCLEAN, Va., May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Why is a sophisticated robotic baby harp seal more effective than real, live dogs or cats at stimulating positive responses from seniors with dementia and other aging-related illnesses?

Come find out Monday, June 2, from 1:30 to 3:00, when Vinson Hall Retirement Community (VHRC) inMcLean, Va., hosts an industry event for experts in aging from universities, corporations, healthcare and senior-related non-profits, retirement communities and others groups.

The event centerpiece will be "Paro," a sophisticated robotic baby harp seal that is making news worldwide for its effectiveness in stimulating positive responses from seniors with dementia and other aging-related illnesses. Paro has been tested on seniors in more than a dozen countries, but VHRC is the only U.S. retirement community to demonstrate the robot.

Paro's inventor is Dr. Takanori Shibata, who is coming to the U.S. specifically for the VHRC event. He is one of the world's experts on the use of robotic technology as therapy in the home, in senior living and in healthcare settings. Shibata holds a PhD. in electromagnetic engineering and he was a postdoctoral associate in the artificial intelligence lab at MIT. Shibata will make a presentation on how individuals and organizations have benefited from his technology and research. All attendees will be invited to interact with Paro.
