Bloomberg L.P. Names Norman Pearlstine Chief Content Officer
NEW YORK, May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Bloomberg today announced that it has
named Norman Pearlstine its Chief Content Officer, a newly-created position.
In this role Pearlstine will partner with Bloomberg News Founder and
Editor-in-Chief Matthew Winkler to seek growth opportunities for its
television, radio, magazine and online products and to make the most of the
existing Bloomberg News operations.
In making the announcement, Bloomberg L.P. President Dan Doctoroff, to
whom both Pearlstine and Winkler will report, said, "Norm's exceptional
accomplishments as the top news executive at Time Inc. and at The Wall Street
Journal, coupled with his most recent work as a Senior Advisor for telecom and
media at The Carlyle Group, give him experience that will prove invaluable to
Bloomberg News. He and Matt Winkler, working side by side, will be one of the
most powerful teams in journalism. Norm will be a tremendous asset to
Bloomberg as we continue to shape new media for this century."
The appointment reunites Pearlstine and Winkler, who first worked together
in the 1980s at The Wall Street Journal. Capping their mutual regard as news
leaders for 25 years, Pearlstine presented Winkler with an Emmy Award for
Lifetime Achievement in Business and Financial Reporting last December. "At
that event I began talking with Norm about the growth of Bloomberg News,"
Winkler said. "I realized he was uniquely qualified to help us shape the
future of Bloomberg News. We quickly agreed on the partnership we are
announcing today."
Pearlstine said, "While I have long respected Matt's remarkable
achievement in building a real-time multimedia platform, driven by the story,
I didn't realize before joining Carlyle how much the world's best investment
professionals rely on Bloomberg's accuracy, thoroughness, timeliness, and
fairness. The Bloomberg advantage is the integration of its news content,
analytics and data. I am honored to become a part of this dynamic
organization," he added.
Prior to joining Carlyle in September 2006, Pearlstine was Editor-in-Chief
of Time Inc., the magazine division of Time Warner Inc., for 11 years. As
Editor-in-Chief, Pearlstine oversaw the editorial content of Time Inc.'s 154
magazines, including Entertainment Weekly, Fortune, In Style, Money, People,
Real Simple, Sports Illustrated, and Time. He was also responsible for the
division's international and new media businesses for several years. Prior to
that, Pearlstine worked at The Wall Street Journal for 23 years. He was the
paper's top news executive for nine years, serving as Managing Editor and then
Executive Editor. He previously worked as the founding Editor and Publisher of
The Wall Street Journal/Europe, the first Managing Editor of The Asian Wall
Street Journal, and theTokyo bureau chief.
Pearlstine was founder of Smart Money magazine and worked as an Executive
Editor of Forbes. He is the author of OFF THE RECORD: The Press, the
Government, and the War over Anonymous Sources, published by Farrar, Straus
and Giroux in 2007.
