Code Pink's Mothers Day Event: Casting Spells For Peace

I use the weapons at my disposal (logic, reason and words) to fight against the immoral, unethical and illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq -- a country that never posed a threat to us.

As a freethinker I don't engage in religious rituals or appeal to the Almighty for peace; I make my entreaties to the earthly powers that be.

But I'm grateful for my religious brethren who are part of the anti-war movement. It going to take the efforts of Americans of all religious and philosophical persuasions to bring an end to this insane war.

As the excerpt from the following article explains witches are new being recruited to join the anti-war effort:

"Here's the latest news from the Code Pink protest of the Berkeley, California, Marine Corps Recruiting Center, courtesy of FOX News. Apparently Friday has been designated as "Witches, clowns and sirens day" for the protesters. In an effort to boost the number of people attending the daily protests, the anti-war group has been conducting a weeklong tribute to Mother's Day. Tuesday's theme was "Fierce mothers raging against war," and Wednesday's theme was "Bring your daughter to the protest." On Thursday the theme was "sisters don't allow sisters to live in war zones" day, and, of course, the witches theme is on tap for today. Code Pink has been telling rally participates to bring pointy hats and spells, and that "Women are coming to cast spells and do rituals and to impart wisdom to figure out how we're going to end war," said Zanne Sam Joi of Bay Area Code Pink." Code Pink's request to have witches join the anti-war protest in Berkeley is probably tongue-in cheek. But I lived in Berkeley for many years, and I know for a fact, that there are covens in that fair city. I wouldn't be surprised if a few real witches show up and conjure some anti-war magic.

Spells and chants, prayers and rosary beads, speeches and essays -- whatever it takes to bring our troops home. I don't believe in the efficacy of prayers or spells, but if these disparate spiritual groups are also donating money to anti-war organizations and writing letters to the editor, I say a hearty "Amen" and "Blessed Be".

If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, by all means take your Mom to code Pink's protest. It's better than waiting an hour to get a seat at the Red Lobster.
