Artist Pays Homage to A Contemporary Madonna
What: On the eve of the release of her 11th full length studio album, Toronto artist Brian Rushton Phillips made public a series of prints honouring the pop icon's career-long rebellion against the Catholic Church.
Entitled 'Pop Reverence', the project juxtaposes images of the "Queen of Pop" in displays of sexual innuendo and eroticism, with an icon of Catholicism; suggesting that contrary to the Church's catechism, the commercialization of mass media has provided pop culture with a platform to continually evolve and redefine what is status quo and moral for contemporary society.
