Mother's Day is Special for Workers At Blue Diamond Workers

It'll be a special day for hardworking and low-paid women workers here at the Blue Diamond Plant Friday where community groups will distribute carnations and Mother's Day cards.

"We've heard how some women workers are treated, and we know how hard they work, so we'd like to make this day a little special," said Manny Gale, a volunteer with (COSBDW) Communities Organizing Support for Blue Diamond Workers.

The Mother's Day event will take place Friday, from 1:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. at 17th and C and 19th & C Streets, during shift changes at the plant.

The cards say: "Happy Mother's Day - with all due respect for everything you do!"

About half of the workers at the Blue Diamond Plant are women - many of them mothers who work as sorters, one of the lowest-paid groups, said COSBDW. According to workers inside the plant, some sorters have reported getting sick from fumigation chemicals and many already suffer from arm, wrist, back and shoulder injuries.

Blue Diamond Growers has ignored requests by community leaders and elected officials, including members of the City Council and even Sen. Darrell Steinberg to meet to discuss "fair and free" union elections at the plant.

Community leaders are concerned about the treatment of workers after hearing testimony at a Town Forum that employees have been harshly treated, sometimes in an illegal manner, during the three years they've been organizing to join the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU).
