Transportation: Making Connections Event to Explore Opportunities and Solutions for People With Disabilities


    HARTFORD, Conn., May 7 /PRNewswire/ --

    WHAT:
    The Connecticut Department of Social Services/Bureau of Rehabilitation
    Services Connect-Ability Initiative and the Connecticut Department of
    Transportation will host the first "Transportation: Making Connections"
    forum to:
    -- Highlight current transportation options for people with disabilities,
       and the vital importance of public transportation to our state's
       economic development and growth;
    -- Provide unique opportunity to broaden partnerships and share creative
       solutions to increase accessible transportation to reduce barriers to
       employment for the more than 250,000 residents who have a physical
       disability;
    -- Learn about DOT's Service Initiative, Phase 2.

Transportation: Making Connections coincides with National Transportation Week and will feature a panel discussion, success stories and a demonstration of public transit options, including the fuel cell bus, ADA paratransit van, accessible taxi and personal vehicle modification vendors. Event attendees include key state agencies, employers, individuals with disabilities, and advocacy organizations.

The first "Transportation: Making Connections" event is being hosted by Connecticut's Department of Social Services/Bureau of Rehabilitation Services' Connect-Ability Initiative and the Connecticut Department of Transportation. Funded by a Department of Social Services grant received from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Connect-Ability is seeking ways to support the competitive employment of people with disabilities and develop a comprehensive system of employment supports for people with disabilities.
