Panthers Women Wing Condemn State Govt. for Discrimination

By Jagdev Singh

A meeting of the political and social activists of the Women Wing of the Panthers Party was held in the Panthers Party Headquarters this afternoon under the Chairmanship of Ms. Anita Thakur, General Secretary of JKNPP to discuss the discrimination against women by the State government as well as by the institution.

Several women activists, educationists, artists and political workers participated. A resolution was carried demanding the implementation of the law made by Parliament against domestic violence on women. This bill was moved by Prof. Bhim Singh in the Legislative Council and is still pending for the past one year. The meeting demanded immediate session of the Legislature to clear this bill as well as the bill on 40% representation to the women in the Legislature as well as in the administration.

Ms. Anita Thakur while addressing the participants accused the State government for its failure to provide justice to the women who are being harassed, tortured and even forces themselves to die. She said the so-called Women Cell in the Police Department has become a den of exploitation and harassment of the women. She said that the dowry cases are being brushed by the police by helping the offenders. She cited several examples where women were subjected to harassment by the police in the Police Stations. She wondered why the police has taken no action on the F.I.R. lodged against the police officials in Anara Gupta's case. That case was living example of harassment and intimidation against the minor girl by the police. F.I.R. was registered on the instructions of the Director General of Police. More than 14 months have passed yet there is no action against trainee police officers. She said in her own case, she was subjected to torture and humiliation on August 07, 2007 when she was publicly brutalized by the police near Katra yet no action was taken against the erring police officers.

The State President of the JKNPP Shri Bansi Lal Sharma, Advocate and State Secretary of JKNPP, Shri Vilakshan Singh, Advocate were also invited to participate as special guests.
