Augusta Systems Technologies Power New Smart Grid Project
MORGANTOWN, W.Va., April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Augusta Systems Inc., provider
of intelligent enterprise network technologies, today announced that its
products have been deployed by Allegheny Power for use in a new Smart Grid
project that integrates controls for building systems and energy management
with utility infrastructure that achieves new levels of peak load control,
energy efficiency and reliability.
Allegheny Power has utilized Augusta Systems(R) EdgeFrontier(TM)
middleware and SensorPort(R) network appliances as the foundation for the
Research Ridge Project -- an intelligent electricity system communications and
control network, linking transformer monitors, power line sensors, circuit
switches, electricity sensing devices, IT systems and the IP network. The new
deployment, at a six-building office park inAllegheny'sWest Virginia service
area, demonstrates how this communications and control network can link the
customer's equipment to the utility's network to optimize energy consumption.
"Controlling peak demand and managing electricity use through smart grid
initiatives provide benefits to utilities and their customers beyond
traditional demand-side management programs," said David E. Flitman, president
of Allegheny Power, Allegheny Energy's electric delivery business. "By
utilizing Augusta Systems technologies to integrate building systems with our
distribution system,Allegheny's network can maximize energy efficiency and
improve customer service and reliability."
The new deployment integrates the electric distribution system
communications and control network with customer building and energy
management systems. With cooperation and two-way communications between
facility owners and the utility, the deployment showcases how reductions in
power requirements can occur through the combined reductions in demand, power
losses and consumption. Specifically, the Augusta Systems technologies enable
intelligent management and control of metering devices, HVAC systems, water
heaters, office equipment, kitchen appliances and other devices within the
office park based upon preferences from the facility owner and system-based
energy demand requirements. During high-price scenarios, the system enables
control of high-usage equipment, such as water heating and air conditioning.
Beyond the building, the deployment includes power line monitors placed on
electricity feeders serving the office park to allow full measurement of
efficiency and energy delivery. In addition, the new system ties into a nearby
substation integrated with the facility network to allow for monitoring of key
distribution system operational parameters including voltages, currents,
recloser operations and transformer health indicators.
"By converging these various systems and devices, Augusta Systems products
provide Allegheny Energy with a platform for improving demand-side management,
energy efficiency and system reliability," said Patrick Esposito, president
and chief operating officer of Augusta Systems. "Allegheny Energy is on the
forefront of electricity distribution system innovations. Instead of deploying
a patchwork of different devices and systems, Allegheny Energy is creating a
unified network for communications and control. This is critical to a
real-time understanding of customer power demands, system health and utility
operations."
About Augusta Systems:
Augusta Systems, Inc. powers intelligent enterprise networks. Augusta
Systems products enable collaboration and communication between enterprise
networks and edge assets -- sensors, actuators, wireless sensor networks, RFID
systems, imagery devices and other edge-of-network systems and devices
-- which have existed beyond the reach of these networks. With platforms for
building and managing solutions featuring data from edge assets, Augusta
Systems provides simplified data integration, processing, correlation and
communication capabilities for Network 2.0-enabled enterprises. Augusta
Systems technologies and integration services -- including core products
SensorBridge(R), EdgeFrontier and SensorPort -- support security, monitoring,
automation, asset tracking and other enterprise applications. Through key
partnerships, Augusta Systems also offers integrated monitoring and control
products, including ThreatViewer(R) and GridMonitor(TM). These technologies
reduce the total cost of ownership for intelligent enterprise networks and
maximize return on investment for enterprise networks and edge assets. For
