Legends Golf Pros Receive Robotic Surgery Demos

SAVANNAH, Ga., April 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Golf greats competing in the annual Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf Tournament as well as spectators will be able to watch and participate in demonstrations of robotic surgery on Saturday, April 26th at Golfest hosted in conjunction with the tournament.

Last fall, St. Joseph's/Candler Health System inSavannah became the first health system in the region to perform surgery using Intuitive Surgical's da Vinci S Surgical System.

In the last 20 years, "minimally invasive surgery" meant using an alternative method of performing a surgery that eliminated the need for the surgeon to make large "open" incisions in the body. But recently developed robotic-assisted technology allows the surgeon to convert complex procedures into an even more minimally invasive experience for the patient.

This nationally recognized system empowers surgeons to operate more precisely while offering the patient the most minimally invasive surgery possible. The patient experiences a reduced risk of complications, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recovery times. Advantages to the surgeon and OR staff include faster setup, rapid instrument exchange, multi-quadrant access and multi-image display capabilities, all of which will support a level of precision, dexterity and control that is unmatched in theSavannah area.

SJ/C is using the da Vinci robot for mitral valve repairs alleviating the need to enter the chest in the traditional manner. It is also used for prostate cancer patients and candidates for certain gynecological procedures. Results for patients will include less pain, blood loss, and less scarring. In addition, this minimally invasive technique will minimize the potential effects of traditional prostate surgery by eliminating or reducing the risk of impotence.

Local surgeons as well as experts from Intuitive Surgical will be on hand all day on the 26th during the tournament to answer questions regarding robotic surgery and to allow guests and players in the tournament to physically interact with the robot.
