Nepal: We are Looking For

By Kamala Prasai

First of all, we would like to congratulate the people of Nepal who took part in the constituent assembly elections without fear. Still, about 40 percent Nepalese missed a once in a lifetime event. So many reasons might have compelled them to refrain from that. And about 60 percent who took part were also threatened, intimidated and forced to abandon their desire from being persecuted in the hands of so-called proletariats. No doubt, life is more precious than anything else especially for the people who lives in remote areas and who know very little about the importance of a ballot and the Constituent Assembly. Ironically, a bullet sounds scarier.

Leaders of the New Nepal, who were given the verdict from less than one-thirds of the population are dreaming to replace the institution of Monarchy, which is 240 years old. In fact, Nepal has never lived without this institution. Kings of Nepal is the source of our continuity, may it be Gopals, Kirats, Lichhavis, Mallas or Shahs. If a supreme commander of the rebellion force of the New Nepal wants to begin his own Dahal dynasty replacing King Gyanendra, the people of Nepal have nothing to say. But, the question is: will Dahal Dynasty with less than one-thirds of the people's support deserves to bear the responsibility that King Gyanendra hitherto been bearing with the love and respect of at least 90 percent of Nepali populace?

If Mr. Dahal, Pushpa Kamal, and his aide Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, C. P. Gajurel, Badal or others really want to test how much the King enjoys respect from the Nepali people, the referendum is the very best option. Don't even think that Nepali people will let you dream about looking at the crown from the close distance. Mr. Dahal seems to be in a hurry to make history. You have already made a history by killing about 15,000 innocent men and women. Don't you think Mr. Dahal, about the big hearts of the Nepali people?

Remember, they readied to forgive you only if the deeds of your past would be corrected genuinely. Otherwise, where are you going to hide? Can your cadets save you from the people's tsunami. Do you think you have YCL and others cannot establish stronger than YCL?

The people of Nepal during the multi-party democracy did not get anything from the Nepali Congress and the UML. They were completely ignored. Nepotism and rampant corruption were prevalent then. Each and everyone who were given responsibilities to deliver goods for the people acted very irresponsibly and looted national treasury. People were denied with the very basic necessities like food, shelter, health care, education and security. This is what the people remembered before casting their ballots. It is not because Maoists had better solutions or that they will deliver in people's favor that prompted people to make rebellions victorious.

The people being cheated by the two major political parties for fifteen years are what the people repaid them. The people's wish neither to have been directed against the Hindu religion nor against the institution of Monarchy. Otherwise, more than two-thirds of the people would not have rejected the Maoists philosophy. As per the rule of the political game, if a few other political parties support, Maoists can form the government for the purpose of facilitating the process of making the new Constitution which will usher into New Nepal.

In no way, New Nepal means just the new faces. Peace should prevail over intimidation, murder and extortion. Corruption and nepotism must not have any place. The foreign dominance has to be completely routed. Preservation of culture, tradition and religion should not be ignored. There must be a guarantee of education for all, equality, generation of employment for youths, security, basic human rights, and the freedom to speak and write against the government's inefficiency should not be barred. The women should get shared equally in all Government's sectors. New Nepal should be very meaningful.
