Earth Day March/Rally Exposing Chevron- Earth Enemy #1
Communities and activists call for Chevron to halt Inhumane Energy
WHAT: In downtown San Francisco, environmental justice and human rights activists are marking Earth Day by holding a march and rally targeting Chevron, a notorious polluter in the San Francisco Bay Area and around the world. The Earth Day action will highlight Chevron's unabated assault on the Earth and the health of communities and the environment near Chevron facilities around the world. The action is in response to Chevron's terrible environmental and human rights record and their false and desperate attack on Ecuadorian activists who were just awarded the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize.
WHEN: Earth Day, Tuesday April. 22 at 12:45.
WHERE: Chevron Corporation- San Francisco offices, 345 California St
VISUALS: March and rally supporters will have creative banners targeting Chevron and CEO Dave O'Reilly, hazmat suits, global warming crime scene tape, with signs and posters.
WHO: West County Toxics Coalition, Amazon Watch, Global Exchange, Greenaction, and Rainforest Action Network, with concerned citizens and activists from throughout the bay area.
WHY: From Ecuador to Richmond, Alberta to Burma, Chevron is engaged in human right abuses and environmental crimes, making it the clear Earth Enemy #1 this Earth Day. In Ecuador, Chevron dumped 18 billion gallons of toxic wastewater into Amazonian waterways and spilled roughly 17 million gallons of crude oil, creating a public health crisis amongst local indigenous and farmer communities. In our own backyard of Richmond CA communities are fighting a refinery expansion that is sure to increase the already record rates of cancer and asthma in communities surrounding the refinery. The refinery expansion in Richmond seeks to enable Chevron to refine the dirtiest fuel source on earth, tar sands. Alberta's tar sands are three times as carbon intensive as traditional oil, taking us even further down the road towards climate chaos.
Chevrons "Human Energy" campaign is merely rhetoric. The reality is that they are invested in "Inhumane Energy" making them Earth Enemy #1 on Earth Day.
