Ivan Lins & Trio da Paz with New York Voices and Rosa Passos Quartet

IVAN LINS Who/What: Jazz at Lincoln Center celebrates the music and spirit of Brazil with the popular Brazilian music icon, singer-songwriter, composer and pianist Ivan Lins and Trio da Paz, joined by vocal jazz quartet New York Voices, bring the essence of romance to Rose Theater. Lins' band includes Leonardo Amuedo (guitar), Marcelo Martins (saxophone), Nehemias Santos (bass) and Teofilo Lima (drums). Trio da Paz is Duduka da Fonseca (drums), Nilson Matta (bass) and Romero Lubambo (guitar). The New York Voices consists of vocalists Peter Eldridge, Lauren Kinhan, Darmon Meader and Kim Nazarian. Trio da Paz is showcased in the first half of the program, followed by Ivan Lins and the New York Voices in the second half.

Why: Ivan Lins' 35-year career has garnered him a 2000 Latin GRAMMY® nominee and a 2001 GRAMMY® award for Latin Pop Vocal. He is a prolific composer and mesmerizing performer. Lins' songs have been recorded by Quincy Jones, George Benson, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae and Barbara Streisand.

ROSA PASSOS Who/What: Known in her native Brazil as the "feminine João Gilberto," singer/songwriter and guitarist Rosa Passos performs in The Allen Room for the first time. She celebrates the 50th anniversary of bossa nova, making the classic bossa nova tunes sound new again. The quartet consists of Rosa Passos (guitar/vocals), Paulo Paulelli (bass), Celso de Almeida (drums) and a special guest.

When: May 23-24, 2008, 7:30pm & 9:30pm

Where: The Allen Room, Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, on Broadway at 60th St., New York City.

Why: Inspired by João Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim - the godfathers of bossa nova - Rosa Passos switched from piano to guitar and began writing her own material as a teenager. As a Brazilian singer and songwriter, she is known for keeping Brazilian jazz alive with all of its mystery, rhythm, and romance intact. Fans all over the world know her to be loyal to her Afro-Brazilian heritage, maintaining the soulful cool of bossa nova without commercial compromise.
