Minister Day Comments on Drug-Related Arrests and Seizures in Saint John
OTTAWA, ONTARIO - (Marketwire - April 11, 2008) - The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, made the following statement today concerning an announcement by the RCMP of a number of arrests and seizures allegedly involving contraband tobacco and liquor, as well as other illegal drugs, in Saint John, NB.
"Today, law enforcement officials in New Brunswick confirmed that seven arrests have been made following a joint operation led by the Saint John Police, with assistance from the RCMP and the Canada Border Services Agency.
These arrests and seizures are the result of an effective partnership between law enforcement officials in Saint John. It is a reflection of our shared commitment to protect Canadians from the effects of organized crime, which often plays a direct role in the production and distribution of illegal drugs and contraband tobacco and liquor.
The Government of Canada remains committed to ensuring that our law enforcement agencies have the tools and resources to tackle crime and keep our streets free from drugs. Canada's National Anti-Drug Strategy has provided additional resources to better disrupt and dismantle criminal organizations involved in the illegal distribution of drugs."
