2008 hundreds of Middle School Mathletes®vie for The Title Of "National Math Champion"

WHAT:
Middle school Mathletes will race to answer such questions as, "What is the greatest prime factor of 221?" or "What is the 100th digit after the decimal point of the decimal representation of1/7," in less than 45 seconds and without the help of a calculator. (Answers: 17 and 8)
WHO:
-The nation's 228 most talented middle school mathematicians.
- Students represent all 50 states, D.C., U.S. Territories and schools from the Department of Defense and State Department.
-Over 41,000 students from 6,300 schools compete in local competitions. Winners advance to the state level and the top four students in each state compete at the National Competition.
-More than 500,000 students use MATHCOUNTS materials in their schools.
COMPETITION STRUCTURE:
-Written Competition: The Sprint, Target and Team Rounds test the ability of individualstudents and teams to solve complex, multi-step problems with, and without, the aid of acalculator. Results determine the National Team Champions and individual student rankings.
-Countdown Round: Fast-paced, one-on-one oral competition for the 12 top-scoring studentsin the Written Competition. The winner is crowned the National Champion. [Open to thepublic]
-Masters Round: Top four students each spend 15 minutes presenting and defending theirsolution to a topic to a group of judges. [Held on Sat., May 10]
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT:
-Strong math skills are necessary for success in a rapidly expanding number of careers.
-U.S. industry faces a dire need for employees with the advanced math abilities required to conduct the leading edge research and design required to remain globally competitive.
ABOUT MATHCOUNTS:-The mission of MATHCOUNTS is to increase enthusiasm for and enhance achievement inmiddle school mathematics throughout the United States.
