The Nevada chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NV) announced today that its executive director has graduated from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's (LVMPD) Citizen's Police Academy. Yasser Moten received his graduation certificate during a ceremony last night at the Jerry Keller Training Center.

The 12-week citizen's academy gives community members "first-hand information on how and why the Department operates, and examining the culture of police work and the organization." Classes focus on topics such as police department organization and ethics, constitutional law and patrol procedures.

"Throughout our nation, American Muslims are building positive working relationships with law enforcement agencies based on the recognition that the safety and security of the United States is a shared trust," said Moten. "We applaud the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for allowing community members to discover first-hand the principles and methods that guide its valuable work."

CAIR, America's largest Islamic civil liberties group, has 35 offices and chapters nationwide and in Canada. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
