Srinagar, March 18: After the killing of Lashkar-e-Toiba's Kashmir chief, Indian army and police killed top commander of the pro-Pakistan militant group, Hizbul Mujahideen, in a 10 hour long encounter in Kashmir.
A top police officer of South Kashmir, Sardar Khan told NewsBlaze that police developed specific information regarding the presence of militant commander in a village at Dongripora, Awantipora in South Kashmir. He said that based on the information, Indian army and police personnel launched a combing operation in the area yesterday evening to flush out the militant commander.
The police officer said that after plugging off all the possible escape routes, the soldiers zeroed-in on a residential house and asked the militant commander present inside to surrender. He, however, turned the officer and fired from sophisticated weapons towards the soldiers. The soldiers took defensive positions and returned the fire.
The exchange of fire between the militant commander and the soldiers continued for 10 hours during which the Hizbul top commander was killed and the house where from he was firing on soldiers damaged.
The slain militant commander was identified as Chota Jehangir. "Two AK rifles, one pistol, one grenade, two RPG rounds, 56 AK rounds and three pistol rounds were recovered from his possession," claimed the police officer.
Terming his killing as a major jolt to the militant group, the police officer said that Chota Jehangir was involved in a number of attacks on troops and pro-Indian politicians.
