Looking for Someone to Do Your Taxes For You for Free? FTB Has 250,000 ReadyReturns Available for Taxpayers at Its Website

The Franchise Tax Board (FTB) today announced that more than 250,000 completed tax returns are available on their website at www.ftb.ca.gov and encourages taxpayers to see if they have one waiting for them.

"ReadyReturn is as easy as it gets," said State Controller and FTB Chair John Chiang. "This program takes existing information and completes the return at no cost to the taxpayer."

ReadyReturn reduces the tax-filing burden for qualified individuals. FTB uses wage and withholding data already provided by employers to complete taxpayers" returns for them. Taxpayers can accept the return as completed, make changes, or choose to use another filing method. Taxpayers who choose to e-file a ReadyReturn can expect to get their refunds in 7 days or less. Typically, more than two-thirds of all California taxpayers get refunds. Last year the average was more than $850.

Taxpayers may be eligible for ReadyReturn if for the 2006 tax return they were single, had no dependents, took the standard deduction, and in 2007 had only one employer.

FTB has received favorable comments from ReadyReturn filers. Recently, one taxpayer remarked, "My experience was more than positive and it's something that should be offered across the board."

Visit the FTB website to read other comments from taxpayers and get more information about ReadyReturn. Taxpayers can also find other helpful information such as how to get a refund fast, pay electronically, and get answers to tax questions.

FTB encourages taxpayers not eligible for ReadyReturn to use CalFile, FTB's free, direct-to-government, e-file program. It is available to taxpayers in both English and Spanish who file the 540 2EZ, 540A and, to a limited degree, the 540 long form. Taxpayers who have questions about state tax filing can call FTB toll-free at 800.852.5711, Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Franchise Tax Board is responsible for administering California's Personal Income Tax and the Corporation Tax. FTB also administers the Homeowner and Renter Assistance program, other non-tax programs, and delinquent debt collection functions.
