Hole Nos. 15 and 16 from the Augusta National Golf Club have provided many
unforgettable moments in Masters Tournament history. In 1935, Gene Sarazen hit
the "shot heard 'round the world" when he holed a 4-wood from 235 yards for a
double eagle on the Par 5 15th in the fourth round of the event. The shot
propelled Sarazen on to victory in just the second Masters Tournament.
While the Par 3 16th has seen 10 hole-in-ones in Masters Tournament
history, no shot on this hole was more memorable than Tiger Woods chip-in in
2005 en route to securing his fourth Green Jacket.
The name Amen Corner refers to hole Nos. 11, 12 and 13. Amen Corner was
first coined in a 1958 Sports Illustrated article by Herbert Warren Wind. Wind
was searching for an appropriate name for the location where the critical
action had taken place that year. He borrowed the name from an old jazz
recording "Shoutin' in that Amen Corner". (Courtesy masters.org)
The Masters, the most renowned tournament in golf, will be broadcast on
CBS for the 53rd consecutive year, a record for the longest-running sporting
event broadcast on one network. This year marks the 72nd Masters Tournament,
one of the most highly-anticipated sporting events of the year.
