LTE on Dairy Cows
By William McMullin
I read the February 29th article, "Who Drank the Milk from Hallmark/Westland Cows?" It is not just this one plant where cows used for dairy are tortured. It is standard operating procedure in the dairy industry. Over the past sixty years, average milk production per cow has increased from about 2.3 tons to 8.9 tons per cow. This is obviously not normal. High milk production leads to many health problems in the cows such as udder ligament damage, mastitis, and lameness. Dairy cows are killed at 5-6 years of age. Normally, they live over 20 years. Dairy cows are not even allowed to give in to their motherly instincts and nurse their young. Dairy cows have a strong maternal bond. Yet, their babies are ripped away from them right away. The male calves are slaughtered immediately or used for veal. Veal calves are kept in a crate so small, they cannot even turn around for almost 20 weeks.
Humans are the only species to drink milk after infancy, and it is not even milk from our own species! I urge readers to try soy or rice milk and forego the cows' milk. TryVeg.com has more information on delicious dairy substitutes.
