Two New Monolithic DC-DC Converters From Toshiba Improve Power Efficiency in Step-Down Converter Applications
IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba America Electronic
Components, Inc. (TAEC)* today announced two new single chip DC-DC converter
ICs intended for use as step-down converters in digital consumer products, PCs
and PC peripherals. Developed by Toshiba Corp., the monolithic DC-DC
converters utilize a new CMOS process to achieve high efficiency and high
output current up to 3.8A, in compact packages with low thermal resistance.
"Our latest generation step-down converters provide the small size and
output flexibility needed for PCs, peripherals and digital consumer products,
with high output current and improved power efficiency," said Jeff Lo,
business development manager, power semiconductors, for TAEC.
The Toshiba step-down converters features adjustable output voltage and a
selection of built in functions including synchronous rectification, under
voltage protection, and adjustable soft start time. In internal testing, the
TCV7101F achieved an efficiency improvement of approximately 4 percent
compared to competitive products tested (1).
The 2.5A output TCV7100F and3.8A output TCV7101F each feature a 2.7V to
5.5V input range. The 2.5A device has typical switching frequency of 800 kHz,
while the 3.8A TCV7101F has typical switching frequency of 600 KHz. The
TCV7101F features a built-in driver for an external low side MOSFET to enable
designers to select the external device most suitable for their design
requirements. Both the TCV7100F and the TCV7101F utilize current mode PWM
control and are packaged in small SOP Advance packages which measure 5mm x 6mm
x 0.95mm and feature low thermal resistance.

available now, priced at $0.70 and $0.75 each, respectively. The TCV7100F is
in mass-production now and mass production for the TCV7101F is scheduled to
begin in March 2008.
Toshiba's Discrete Products
Since 1986, Toshiba Corp. has ranked as the top discrete supplier on a
worldwide basis, based on annual revenue from international shipments of total
discrete products. According to the most recent
annual report from market research firm Gartner Dataquest (San Jose, CA),
Toshiba remained the top discrete semiconductor supplier. (Source: "2006
Worldwide Semiconductor Market Share Report," Gartner, released April 2007).
More specifically, Toshiba is a leading supplier in a number of discrete
product categories, including power transistors, rectifiers and thyristors,
LMOS logic, CMOS logic, optoelectronics, small signal diodes and transistors.
The company's discrete devices are designed to meet the growing demand for
high-performance and lower voltages in today's wireless telecommunications and
consumer electronics applications, while emphasizing its strength in the
automotive and industrial markets.
