FREDERICTON, NEW BRUNSWICK - (Marketwire - Feb. 16, 2008) - On behalf of the Honourable Josee Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages, Mr. Mike Allen, Member of Parliament (Tobique-Mactaquac), today announced funding for Winterfest NB.
Funding of $18,000 will enable Winterfest NB to expand its activities, including dog sled and ice sculptures. The sixth annual Winterfest NB is taking place on February 16 and 17, 2008.
"The Government of Canada is pleased to announce funding for Winterfest NB, one of the first festivals to receive funding under the new Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program," said Minister Verner. "We are proud to partner with communities to support activities that celebrate local history and heritage."
"Local festivals like this one bring people of all ages and all walks of life together and contribute to our communities' quality of life," said Mr. Allen. "I am proud that our Government is supporting such an important event for the provincial capital."
"As a non-profit group made up of volunteers who give of their time, expertise, and passion, Winterfest NB is thrilled to receive funding from the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage Program," said John Antworth, President and Chief Executive Officer of Winterfest NB. "This financial commitment means we were not only able to offer and expand our unique, popular activities, but also include new activities. More importantly, it means Winterfest NB will work with Canadian Heritage to expand heritage, cultural, and educational components for coming events. This supports our vision to capture the spirit of our community in the beautiful winter landscape of our provincial capital region."
The new Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage (BCAH) program, announced in September 2007, provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in local activities that present arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage. This program will benefit many community events and celebrations in Canada throughout the coming year.
The Government of Canada is committed to building stronger communities and to providing all Canadians with opportunities to get involved in their communities and in the celebration of Canadian arts and heritage.
