NEW YORK, Feb. 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Dr. Oliver Sacks,
neurologist, Columbia University professor and New York Times bestselling
author, known for his neurological case studies in Awakenings, will share
inspiring stories about the healing power of music for aphasics and others
with brain trauma from his latest work: Musicophilia - Tales of Music and the
Brain. Award-wining alternative musician and songwriter Marc Black, will

which was inspired by the poetry of a friend coping with aphasia after a
stroke. They will appear at the Annual Spring Benefit of the National Aphasia
Association (NAA) on Tuesday, April 1, 6 pm, at Comix, 353 West 14th Street,
NYC. Proceeds will help support resources, education and services for people
with aphasia and their families.
"We are extremely honored that two great talents such as Dr. Oliver Sacks
and Marc Black are helping us raise awareness of aphasia -- the sudden
inability to read, write, speak or understand speech -- usually after a stroke
or other traumatic brain injury," says NAA Executive Director Ellayne S.
Ganzfried, MS, CCC-SLP. "Over 1 million Americans are living with aphasia and
there are over 200,000 new cases each year, yet very few people know about it
until they or someone they love is devastated by this condition."
NAA is a consumer-focused, not-for-profit organization that was founded in
1987 as the first national organization dedicated to advocating for persons
with aphasia and their families. NAA helps an estimated 100,000 families a
year by providing free resources including: a national hotline (800-822-4622),
Web site (www.aphasia.org) and a national registry of over 330 aphasia support
groups in the US.
At the Annual Spring Benefit, NAA will honor Elliot J. Roth, MD, with the
NAA Advocacy Award for his life-long work helping people with aphasia. Dr.
Roth holds senior-level positions at the Rehabilitation Institute ofChicago
(RIC), Northwestern University Medical School and Northwestern Memorial
Hospital. He is the founder and former director of RIC's Center for Stroke
Rehabilitation. A prolific author and frequent lecturer, Dr. Roth was named
one of Chicago's Top Doctors, byChicago Magazine, in 2007.
