High Democrat Turnout May Be Preview for Super Tuesday
By Alan Gray, NewsBlaze
The National Committee for an Effective Congress, a progressive political committee says the most striking feature of the Democratic primary season to date, has been remarkable turnout.
In state after state - Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Nevada, Florida - turnout records have been broken, establishing new records.
Whether it was a win for Obama, as in Iowa and South Carolina, or a win for Clinton, as in New Hampshire, Nevada, and Florida, turnout has been remarkable.
The committee says "Unmistakably, the Obama campaign has tapped into an excited youth vote, irrespective of racial considerations. That bodes well for the general election. In fact, the remarkable African-American turnout in South Carolina leads to the conclusion that South Carolina and Mississippi - two unwaveringly red states - might be in play in the general election."
An article published by the committee shows interesting results in early primaries and caucuses turnout:
IOWA - 236,000 - almost double the previous high - 90% higher than in 2004.
NEW HAMPSHIRE - 288,000 - 31% higher than in 2004 - almost 30% of all eligible voters participated in the Democratic primary.
NEVADA - 118,000, an astounding caucus turnout - 57% higher than that of any past caucus.
SOUTH CAROLINA - 523,000 - 78% higher than the 2004 turnout. Almost 300,000 African-Americans went to the polls.
FLORIDA - 1,700,000 - 31% above the previous high set in 1976.
