For Art's Sake! Award-Winning Playwrite/Producer Takes a Stand
Odalys Nanin, the instigator behind the survival of one of LA's historical Theatre landmark, The Globe Playhouse, now renamed MACHA THEATRE, is taking more than a stand this year; she is actively getting involved in some of the social, political and artistic issues that are affecting not only the arts and entertainment arena but the community as a whole.
First on her agenda is her endorsement of The "TV Takes the Stage" Project for which she committed to directing one of the playets. A group of 16 striking TV writers have come together to craft a lineup of short plays featuring TV-series actors that will run for five performances in Los Angeles.
The profits from the playlets, under the umbrella title "TV Takes the Stage," will be funneled to the Motion Picture and TV Fund to help non-writers who have suffered since the strike began on Nov. 5.
Nanin is directing the play title "Moonstone" by Eric Overmyer.
The writers are asking the producers to give them 4 pennies for every download from the internet. The play that she is directing is a metaphor of the writer's 4 pennies demands.
The event takes place at the Macha Theater in West Hollywood from Jan. 31 through Feb. 3, and talks are under way to bring the performance to New York.
The tickets cost between $20 and $30 each.
In addition, Odalys Nanin has been invited to join the panel of guest speakers at the 1st Annual It's About Life Expo this coming June, 2008 in Seattle. Other celebrities invited include Sandra Bernhard, Ari Gold and Liz Clark.
"It's About Life" is not just a business &consumer expo, it is also an event that combines international music with authors and speakers that are geared toward the issues that affect the LGBT community. Nanin will speak about the issues, trials, obstacles and advantages of being a minority within a minority.
The expo begins Friday, June 20th with a fun evening of bingo to support the Lifelong Aids Alliance and ends with an Awards Luncheon on Sunday, June 22.
Nanin will take the stage again this Valentine's Day as she opens "LOVE STRUCK" at Macha Theatre. A romantic comedy by Marie Barrientos and Nanin herself, back by popular demand for its 10th year Anniversary. She co-stars opposite Tricia Cruz known for her performance in "Latinologues" as well as being a host for LATV Live and West Coast correspondent for ABC's "Urban Latino".
A jack of all trades Odalys has and is certainly making a huge difference as a prominent member of the arts community. She has become quite a motivation and an inspiration to many aspiring talents and business entrepreneurs alike, not only as a woman but as well as a Latina. Her newly revived Macha Theatre stands tall and strong as one of the only Latina run Theater in the country.
That is certainly why, Nanin was featured as one of the 100 Men and Women who Made 2007 in the December issue of OUT Magazine.
Indeed, her remarkable numerous accomplishments within the entertainment industry particularly in the Performing Arts category have positioned her as a creative voice and force certainly to be reckoned with.
