Government of Canada Announces Divestiture of the Federal Wharf at Portneuf-sur-Mer
QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC - (Marketwire - Feb. 1, 2008) - Denis Lebel, Member of Parliament for Roberval - Lac St Jean, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the federal government and the municipality of Portneuf-sur-Mer have reached an agreement in principle concerning the divestiture to the municipality of the federal wharf at Portneuf-sur-Mer (Hamilton Cove).
"This divestiture demonstrates the commitment of the municipality of Portneuf-sur-Mer to ensuring the management and development of this asset for its citizens' benefit," said Mr. Lebel. "Today's announcement also demonstrates the Government of Canada's recognition of the value and importance of developing local infrastructure."
"The divestiture is the culmination of a long process of close cooperation with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans," said Jean-Marie Delaunay, mayor of Portneuf-sur-Mer. "The support of Minister Hearn and of his department have allowed us to take another step toward the development of tourism in our region," concluded Mayor Delaunay.
The agreement includes a transfer of $600,000 to the municipality to allow repairs to the wharf facilities. This divestiture is a good example of the cooperation between the Department and local stakeholders, and is implemented under the Divestiture Program administered by the Small Craft Harbours branch of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
