History of Folsom's Businesses on Sutter Street
By Alan Gray, Folsom Local News
Ellen Hester, Folsom History Museum Research Director gave a presentation on Sutter Street Businesses to The Heritage Preservation League of Folsom, California.
The presentation took participants back over 100 years, talking about basements, wine cellars, wooden walkways, businesses, family names and bells. The tour goes underground, at street level and up high. Ellen talked about the work done to uncover this information, over the past 2 years of research.
Initially, buildings were constructed of wood, but they were extremely vulnerable to fire. Eventually, the temporary nature of wooden buildings was overcome by building with brick. Many interesting facts were presented, including the narrow width and long depth of most of the buildings, a set of unusual windows, and a building with a railway track inside.
The presentation included a handout, most of which has been included in the video.
