10 Militants, 2 Soldiers Killed in Kashmir Gunfights

Srinagar, Nov 16: Militant violence in Kashmir is on the rise and during the past 24 hours, at least 10 militants and two Indian soldiers were killed in fierce gunfights.
An Indian army's spokesman in Srinagar, Col A K Mathur told News Blaze that army personnel received specific information about militants, confirmed by their own surveillance. They launched a search operation yesterday evening in the Lolab area og the border district of Kupwara, some 110 kilometers from the summer capital Srinagar.
He said that while the cordon was being laid, militants hiding in the area fired at the soldiers. The fire was returned by the troops and the exchange of fire between the two sides continued throughout the day today. In the fierce gunfight, six militants - five from Pakistan - plus two Indian army personnel were killed.
The spokesman identified the slain militants as Chacha Sajjad, top commander of Pakistan based militant group, Harkat-ul-Mujahideen. Other slain militants were identified as Shakeel, Qari Ajmal, Qari Samiullah and Tahir of Jaish-e-Mohammad, all from Pakistan. The sixth militant killed in the gunfight was a Kashmiri militant
"A large quantity of arms including six AK 47 Rifles, 22 magazines, 601 rounds AK 47 ammunitions, one Radio Set ICON, 08 hand grenades, one mobile set, two mobile battery, Rs. 2017/- (Indian Currency), Rs. 100/- (Pak Currency) and four dairies were recovered from the possession of the slain militants", the spokesman said.
The spokesman further said that three militants were killed by Indian army personnel when they tried to cross over to this side of border from Pakistani Administered Kashmir (PAK). Three AK rifles and some ammunition was recovered from them.
A police spokesman said that another militant was killed in an encounter at village Gund-Mancher in Kupwara, some 100 kms from the summer capital Srinagar. He said that the identity of the slain militant is being ascertained.
