Suisun City residents hold Community Meeting Sunday after environment report reveals proposed Wal-Mart poses threat to streets and air, Travis Air Base
SUISUN CITY, Ca. - Residents will learn at a special Community Meeting here Sunday that a proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter will increase traffic by nearly 50 percent on nearby Highway 12 - known as "blood alley" - and surrounding streets, and will also dirty air, water and threaten to close Travis Air Force Base.
The meeting, set for Sunday, Oct. 28, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Joe Nelson Community Center (611 Village Drive), will be the first public look at the Draft Environmental Impact Report on the Wal-Mart project.
Among those speaking Sunday will be former Solano County Supervisor Duane Fromm and geologist Wayne Monger, a Suisun City resident.
According to the EIR, more than 61,000 new weekly car trips - up from about 138,000 currently - and as many as hundreds of truck trips a day will be generated, resulting in "significant" air pollution increase in the entire Suisun City area.
The Wal-Mart, a 20-acre, 214,919 square foot project the size of four football fields located at Walters Road, Rt. 12 and Petersen Rd, also appears to violate the Airport Land Use Plan, which limits the number of people within a "safety buffer zone" around Travis Air Force Base. This violation could lead to the closing of Travis AFB, the largest area employer.
The Draft EIR also outlines other major problems, including drainage and storm water runoff - laden with heavy metals, grease, gasoline residues and other toxic chemicals - into the neighborhood, significant noise level increases, police and fire departments impacts, road improvement costs, business and job loss and urban blight.
Light refreshments will be served at the meeting, which is free and open to the public and co-sponsored by the Suisun Citizens League and California Health Community Network, a project of the non-profit Tides Center.
