PITTSBURGH, Oct. 25, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Chatham University will present the prestigious Rachel Carson Award to SCA Founding President Elizabeth Cushman Titus Putnam on Thursday, October 25, at the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. The presentation marks two conservation milestones: it has been 100 years since Ms. Carson's birth and 50 years since SCA was founded in 1957.

SCA -- the Student Conservation Association -- is a national force of conservation volunteers that protects and restores America's parks, forests and public lands. Celebrating its 50th anniversary and 50,000th conservation volunteer in 2007, SCA is also active in major cities across the U.S. including Pittsburgh, where more than 300 local high school students were engaged in SCA programming last summer. The City of Pittsburgh has supported SCA since its inception in 1957, and for the past six years SCA has had an active regional office in the city. SCA volunteers work in parks and communities across the Three Rivers region, including Schenley, Grandview and Frick Parks. Recognizing this valuable partnership in conservation, the Pittsburgh City Council has officially proclaimed Thursday, October 25 "SCA Day."

To honor its 50th anniversary, SCA is hosting a series of special events this year. The SCA/Mazda Conservation in Action Multimedia Contest is aimed at generating the next big idea in conservation by engaging the intelligence, passion and leadership of America's young people. The winner will win a free trip, among other prizes, to Earth Vision: Actions for a Healthy Planet. This first-of-its-kind youth in conservation summit, to take place in Washington, DC in April 2008, will convene the best and the brightest of young conservation leaders with government agency chiefs, elected officials, corporate executives, scientists, media personalities and others to craft citizen-driven solutions to today's environmental challenges.
