CBS 3 and Susan G. Komen for the Cure Turn Philadelphia Area Skyline Pink Again for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Philly Police Department Joins Battle Against Breast Cancer

CBS 3 (KYW-TV) and the Philadelphia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen For The Cure will turn the skyline pink for the sixth year in a row this month with its annual breast cancer awareness campaign, LIGHTS FOR THE CURE™.

More than 60 buildings and landmarks in the area will light their exteriors pink beginning at sunset tonight, Monday, October 1 and throughout the month as a reminder to remain vigilant in the fight for a cure. CBS 3 will also air special promotional announcements throughout October reminding area women to schedule a mammogram as part of the station's ongoing breast cancer awareness campaign.

Symphony House, one of the newest additions to the Philadelphia skyline at Broad and Pine Streets, and the future home of the Philadelphia Theatre Company, will join the campaign for the first time this year along with GlaxoSmithKline. Other landmarks include: Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles; LOVE Park Fountain; the Battleship New Jersey; Macy's Grand Court in Center City; Boathouse Row and Camden City Hall in New Jersey, among many others. Atlantic City will also participate, showing its colors on Friday, October 12th with 10 buildings participating.

"Awareness is still a crucial part of the fight against breast cancer," says President and General Manager Michael Colleran. "CBS 3 has been committed to spreading the word about early detection for almost two decades, and, as long as this disease still takes a toll on this community, we are staying the course."

"Despite all of our progress in fighting this disease, many women still put off their annual mammograms which makes it difficult to detect breast cancer when it is most curable," says Elaine Grobman, executive director of the Philadelphia affiliate of Susan G. Komen For The Cure, the world's largest network of breast cancer activists. "Lights For The Cure is a can't miss reminder for women to get tested."

This year, the Philadelphia Police Department will also join the fight against breast cancer. This Friday, October 5, community relations officers and other administrative staff will be stationed on local street corners handing out pink ribbons to passersby while collecting donations in support of Susan G. Komen For The Cure. The Police Department effort is a salute to local female officers battling this disease.
