Israeli Surveillance System Deployed on Kashmir Frontiers
By Fayaz Wani
Srinagar, Sept 25: To keep a check on the infiltration of militants from Pakistani side of Kashmir, the Indian Army has installed new and sophisticated surveillance equipment at selected points in the border district of Kupwara in Kashmir.
The system named, Surveillance Grid was imported from Israel. According to highly placed sources, it has been installed at selected points prone to infiltration in the border district of Kupwara to keep a track on the movement of militants.
Sources said that the Surveillance Grid is the first monitoring system of its kind in South Asia. "The surveillance grid makes combined use of high-power cameras, thermal sensing cameras and long range observation system (Loros) to monitor all types of movements at and across the border with Pakistan", sources said.
They further said, "the cameras in the grid can see up to 17 km; thermal cameras can see any type of activity at night and Loros is a multi-sensor imaging system for long-range day-night observation".
The data collected by all three systems, according to sources, is transferred to different locations where it is monitored by specially trained Indian Army officers. "The software records not only the footage from all three types of cameras but also passes a special warning when there is any type of activity at and across the border", the sources said.
"The success rate of surveillance grid is very high", the sources said.
Keeping in view the success rate of the grid, the Indian Army is planning to install more surveillance grids at other points prone to infiltration along the frontiers with Pakistan. "More such surveillance grids from Israel are going to be acquired", the sources added.
