OPSEU Applauds Outstanding Effort of Organizers and Volunteers at 2007 International Plowing Match

"To know that Leeds-Grenville warmly welcomed more than 80,000 visitors to this year's plowing match speaks volumes about the dedication, resourcefulness and hard work of local organizers and volunteers," said Eaton, who represents eastern Ontario on the OPSEU board.

"This year's event went off without a hitch thanks in large measure to the long hours put in by local residents who stepped forward as volunteers. They were ambassadors on behalf of the 'can do' spirit that Leeds-Grenville is known for."

OPSEU was pleased to host an exhibitor's booth at the plowing match. The booth highlighted the union's campaign to bring hundreds of Ontario meat processing plants, called "freestanding plants," into the provincial inspection system.

Eaton noted that hundreds of visitors to the plowing matched stopped by the OPSEU exhibit and learned more about the issue.

"Ontario meat is safe. But there are more than 1,000 plants out there that are not receiving the inspection they need. This is an important public safety issue, and we are calling on all political parties in the Oct. 10 election to commit to dealing immediately with this issue," said Eaton.
