U.S. Polar Bears Extinct in 50 Years...

  Share With Friends

by Rodger Schlickeisen

Polar bears will likely be extinct from the U.S. in 50 years, according to top scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey -- and that's a conservative estimate.

Please give $50 or whatever you can spare to support our work on two critical fronts to save them.

Polar bears are in a tight spot. Sea ice -- vital for hunting seals, their main food source -- is melting at an alarming rate. These strong swimmers are even drowning in their search for adequate sea ice for hunting.

According to the USGS study, polar bears will likely be gone from Alaska in just a few decades.

Right now, we're in a critical fight in the Senate to pass the Global Warming Wildlife Survival Act -- vital legislation already passed by the House -- to help polar bears and other wildlife adapt to the worst impacts of global warming.

Help us save our struggling polar bears. Please donate today to support our work to pass critical legislation like the Global Warming Wildlife Survival Act before it's too late.

Even as vital sea ice habitat disappears, we need to ensure that the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge -- the most important onshore denning habitat for America's polar bears -- remains protected forever.

Big Oil and its allies in Congress continue to use every political trick in the book to get their hands on the Arctic Refuge.

If they succeed, it could prove disastrous for our remaining polar bears. Increased drilling -- and the industrialization that comes with it -- could cause mothers to abandon their dens, leaving cubs to die. Oil spills and toxic leaks could have devastating effects on this pristine habitat.

With around 400 crude oil and toxic spills each year, the nearby Prudhoe oil field is testament to the destruction that the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge would face if Big Oil were allowed to drill there.

Please donate today to support our work to permanently protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge -- and ensure polar bears won't disappear forever.

We're rallying tens of thousands of Defenders activists across the country to the polar bear's cause. Our advocates are visiting key Members of Congress on behalf of these vanishing creatures and we're winning support for vital legislation to save them.

Time and time again, we've stopped Big Oil's attempts to invade the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Now, on the heels of some of the bleakest news for the polar bears that depend on this special place, we must do even more to ensure that polar bears survive a changing climate -- and finally put an end to Big Oil's destructive quest. Please donate now to underwrite these vital efforts.
