Night Watch: DEIR EZ-ZOUR – It now seems the “violation” by Israel of Syrian air space Sep. 6 was indeed a specific air strike conducted by the Israel Air Force (IAF) on a Syrian-Iranian missile base near Deir Ez-Nour along the Euphrates River, eastern Syria just 70 miles from the Iraq border.

AFP reports, although Jerusalem has maintained an official news blackout on the attack, anonymous Israeli sources have informed the Arab-Israeli newspaper Assennara an attack was definitely carried out on a “base in northern Syria, a Syrian-Iranian missile base financed by Iran… It appears that the base was completely destroyed.”

Israel President Shimon Peres stated, “The central problem with Syria is Lebanon-the question is to know whether Lebanon will be Lebanese or Iranian. The Syrians support Hezbollah and provide them with arms. As long as they continue on this route there will be tension in the air.”

Peres is actually admitting, as a result of the three month fighting at the Palestinian camp-city Nahr al-Bared between part of Lebanon’s army and the suicide unit Fatal al-Islam near Tripoli, Beirut is no longer influenced by Paris and the West but is now controlled by Tehran-Damascus. Israel’s successful air raid was not unlike its destruction of Iraq’s nuclear facility in 1981, which Baghdad constructed with material and equipment provided by France. Though Iran may not launch any at Israel Tehran would love to see Syria do so as Tehran then commits a few expendable units in the name of supporting Syria and Palestinian people. There have been reports from the New York Times Israel may have destroyed nuclear weapons material supplied by North Korea. Beijing has used Pyongyang, since the end of the Cold War in 1990, as a major supplier of Iran’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs but since Moscow reasserted its old influence there a year ago, after North Korea tested a nuclear bomb underground, Tehran is having Pyongyang export whatever nuclear weapons material it has left to Syria.

This accounts for the strong condemnation of Israel’s raid by a spokesperson for North Korea’s Foreign Ministry reported by Xinhua-KCNA yesterday, “This is a very dangerous provocation little short of wantonly violating the sovereignty of Syria and seriously harassing the regional peace and security. The DPRK strongly denounces the above-said intrusion and extends full support and solidarity to the Syria people in their just cause to defend the national security and the regional peace.” [XINHUA]

The “tension in the air” Israel President Peres referred to has only just gotten started. The regional war this year, that began in late winter in Gaza-West Bank, has already begun to escalate and will encompass more than just Israel/Syria-Lebanon-Iran. Every Islamic government from Tripoli to Tehran and most European governments along the Mediterranean will be caught up in it.
