Clear Illustrations and Plain-Language Writing Help Improve Health Literacy

"Healthwise for Life," a self-care guide for people age 50 and older, has won an Association of Medical Illustrators certificate of merit for its medical illustrations. Healthwise's unique visual content style combines contour, tone, and color to help people make better health decisions.

"Healthwise has been publishing self-care guides since 1975," said Molly Mettler, MSW, Healthwise senior vice president and co-author of the book. "Our new 7th edition 'Healthwise for Life' has a brand-new look -- full of color. And the new illustrations really help people understand and use the self-care information in the book."

The Association of Medical Illustrators reviews and recognizes bodies of visual work that not only are unique and anatomically and procedurally accurate but that also support the related written content and have artistic value. "Healthwise for Life" medical illustrators follow key principles of visual theory to help people quickly understand the images. These principles help ensure that Healthwise illustrations support the company's focus on plain-language, easy-to-understand materials.

The Healthwise family of self-care guides -- "Healthwise Handbook," "Healthwise for Life," and "La salud en casa: Guía práctica de Healthwise" -- have been recently redesigned, reorganized, and produced in full color. The printed self-care books also include Go-to-Web codes that point people to more in-depth information online. Through the years, Healthwise publications have won numerous national awards including National Health Information Awards and National Mature Media Awards.
