Dalton McGuinty Breaking Promises on Health Tax and Democratic Reform, Says NDP

Section 29.2 of the Income Tax Act states that "A standing or select committee of the Assembly shall be appointed to review the Ontario Health Premium within four years... The committee shall begin its review on or after the date specified by the Assembly, which date shall be no earlier than June 30, 2008, and shall report the results of its review to the Assembly no later than December 31, 2008."

As recently as June, McGuinty and his Liberals were still claiming that this review may result in an end to the health tax:

(McGuinty) noted that the health premium is scheduled for a five year review in 2009, but refused to speculate on whether or not a Liberal government would roll it back.

Now he says no matter what the Legislative Committee finds he's keeping his regressive tax in place.

This from a Premier who promised: "We will give more independence and power to legislative committees" (p7, Ontario Liberal Plan for a More Democratic Ontario, 2003) and "We will hold the line on your taxes" (p5, Ontario Liberal Plan for Economic Growth, 2003).
