Crossfire War - Israel Bombards Northern Gaza as Tanks Take Up Position

Night Watch: SDEROT - Xinhua reports Israel artillery and rocket fire bombarded one of the bases of Hamas in northern Gaza in response to the continued Qassam rocket fire by Hamas and Jihad Islami which fired nearly 300 rockets into Israel in August. Though the Qassam does not have the range (7 miles) or power of the Katyusha and is not accurate, it will cause light damage and some casualties. Sderot, a town of 20,000 residents has had to shut down its school system because of the attacks and parents-teachers are in Jerusalem demonstrating for the government to do more to guarantee their security. An Israeli ground-to-ground missile did hit a concrete wall around the Hamas base but caused no casualties. The base used belong to Fatah until Hamas, the more radical anti-Israel anti-West organization took over the Gaza Strip in June. [XINHUA]

Israeli tanks have taken up position a few hundred yards inside Gaza on the outskirts of Beit Hanoun, which created panic among the villagers who believe it is a prelude to an Israeli invasion. It was reported yesterday more ministers in Israel's government are advocating a stronger military response to the constant attacks and massive arms smuggling directed by Tehran from Egypt - Sinai into Gaza and the West Bank. Debka is now reporting Israel Defense Minister Ehud Barak has stated they are headed for a major operation to not only end the Qassam rocket fire but to attack the Hamas military buildup.
